It’s not everyday you hear of an 11-year-old entrepreneur who, inspired by lockdown boredom, takes on the challenge of starting her own business. But that’s exactly what Castle Cove Charlotte Merrin has done with Queen Bath – a range of bath salts. Here we speak to the talented youngster about what led to this impressive achievement.

Tell us a bit about yourself Charlotte…

My name is Charlotte Merrin and I’m the founder of Queen Bath. I am 11 years old. I love swimming and soccer. I live in Castle Cove and I am in grade 6 at Ravenswood School for Girls.

What made you decide to start your own business?

I decided to start my own business because I was looking for a way to make money whilst also having lots of fun, and also to keep me busy in lockdown. I thought that starting a business would be really fun because I have created pretend websites and shops in the past for play and school and I enjoyed it a lot. I love baths much more than showers, but my sensitive skin means that I can’t use many bath bombs without becoming itchy or getting a rash. I wanted to make baths more exciting so I did some research and found out that bath salts were the perfect product to start my business with, because of the many benefits of Epsom and Himalayan Salts.

How did you go about it?

First, I had to finalise my products. I chose the essential oils, the flowers and the fruits. Then I made a logo on Canva and a website on Wix. Next up, and I needed my parents help for this part, the costing. I needed to find the right suppliers, and the best quality products for my salts. I had to create a spreadsheet and calculate how much it costs to make each bag, and then add a profit. Finally, we bought the bags and labels for my products. Then Queen Bath was launched. As the business grew, we ordered mailing satchels, boxes and improved bags. We started buying in bulk to lower the cost, too.

Do you make your products yourself at home? What is involved in the process?

I make my products at home. I get less orders during the school week, so whenever I get one of them I make it that afternoon ready for pickup or delivery. Sometimes, we do promotions on local Facebook pages, and then I pay my brother to make some with me so we can drop them off for Sunday night.

Tell us a bit about your range of products.

Right now I only sell bath salts, but we are working on a new product to launch this school holidays (stay tuned). My bath salts come in two sizes, a large that makes 4-6 baths, and a small that makes 2 baths. There are four scents: Calm, Love Actually, Citrus Sensation and Stress Less. They are all made with essential oils from doTERRA. I use high quality dried flowers for my salts from Naked Foods in Northbridge, along with dried lemons and oranges.

How is your business going? Have you got some customers already?

Queen Bath is thriving. I launched on the 6th of July and I have had over 40 orders so far. I have had many orders from friends and family, but I have also had a few orders from people who I don’t know, and I get really excited when these happen, because I know the person is genuinely supporting me. I have had a few returning customers, and lots of great reviews. I am really proud of how I have been doing, and I am so very grateful for all of my customers, no matter how many salts they order.

What do your family and friends think about you going into business so young?

My family are all very supportive of me, and lots of them have ordered. My first order was from my dad’s cousin Kimmy. She is one of my favourite people in the world and is always so proud and encouraging to me. My cousins, aunties, uncles and grandparents have all ordered some of my products, and also a few of my friends.
