Tucked into the leafy, village-like stretch of Willoughby Road, Byliztieu Studio is a boutique hair and beauty space created by hair and makeup artist Liz Tieu.
With more than 25 years in the industry, Liz’s career has taken her from salons to television sets, fashion shoots, red carpets, weddings and major productions. But these days, one of her favourite places to work is much closer to home, behind the chair in her Willoughby studio.
Her credits include work as a hair and makeup contributor to Body+Soul, as well as head of department for Eurovision Australia.

“I love all the different sides of my work, but the salon gives me something completely different. I get to know my clients, understand their lifestyle and create something that genuinely works for them.”
That approach is particularly suited to the women Liz sees every day: busy mums, professionals and style-conscious locals who want beautiful, modern hair without feeling like they need to completely reinvent themselves every visit.
And despite Liz’s extensive television and editorial background, she wants the studio itself to feel anything but intimidating.
“You absolutely don’t need to know what to ask for before you come in. That’s my job. Bring me a photo, tell me what you love or what isn’t working with your hair, and we’ll work it out together.”
The studio offers personalised colour, blondes, brunette blends, foiling, toning, cutting, styling and smoothing treatments, as well as professional hair and makeup for events, weddings and special occasions.

Liz’s work outside the salon also keeps her constantly exposed to new products, techniques and trends. But rather than following every trend, she brings back the ideas that translate into real life.
“My clients are the ones who benefit from the variety of what I do. I’m constantly seeing new techniques and products, but in the salon it’s about adapting those ideas to the individual: their hair, their face, their lifestyle and how much time they actually want to spend getting ready.”
The salon reflects the same philosophy. It’s deliberately boutique and personal, with an emphasis on consultation rather than rushing clients through appointments.
For Liz, being in Willoughby is also a big part of what makes the studio feel right.
“I love that Willoughby feels like a little village while still being so close to the city. There are wonderful independent businesses here, people know each other, and word of mouth really matters. That sense of community is exactly what I want the studio to be part of.”

Many of Liz’s existing clients travel across Sydney to see her, while an increasing number simply live around the corner, something she would love to see continue.
For anyone who has walked past the studio, followed Liz’s work online or simply wondered whether Byliztieu Studio might be right for them, her invitation is simple:
“Come in and say hello. Even if you’re not sure what you want yet, I’m always happy to have a conversation. I want people to feel comfortable walking through the door. You don’t need a special occasion, a dramatic transformation or even the right beauty vocabulary.”
Whether it’s refreshing a colour, finding a haircut that makes everyday life easier, trying something new or having professional hair and makeup for an event, Byliztieu Studio is about making expert hair and beauty feel personal, approachable and enjoyable.
And ultimately, that’s exactly what Liz wants the studio to become: a trusted local destination for great hair, professional beauty services and honest advice, right here in Willoughby.
