Looking for a playground that’s more than just the usual monkey bars and swings? Check out the North Shore’s newest, dubbed the ‘Channel 9 playground’ by locals, which has now officially opened.

Remember the giant tower that used to dominate the Willoughby skyline? That was the transmission tower for Channel 9, beaming our favourite shows into our living rooms for decades.

After the tower was decommissioned in 2021, we all thought it was the last we’d see of our well-known local landmark. However, playground designers have cleverly repurposed a section of the dismantled tower, creating a one-of-a-kind climbing structure. It now features in the new NINE by Mirvac’s onsite ‘Parabol Playground’, which is now open.

The name Parabol is a nod to the parabolic shape of the satellite dishes that used to direct radio waves from this location- a subtle reminder of the tower’s broadcasting past.

The playground is packed with all sorts of awesome play equipment for all ages and abilities. Climbing nets, slides that snake around the base of the tower, swings, and plenty of nature for exploration and imaginative play.

What’s even more interesting are the little historical nuggets scattered around the playground. Panels showcase the evolution of television, from its black and white beginnings to the digital age. Your kids won’t believe how big the first tvs were or how we had to get up to change the channel!

While Parabol Playground doesn’t have its own dedicated cafe yet, there are a couple of great options nearby, like The Incinerator or Little Giant Roasters, both just a short walk away.

Looking ahead, the development that houses the playground, NINE by Mirvac, includes a dedicated space called the Plaza, designed to be a social hub featuring a local restaurant, cafe, or providore. While they’re still searching for the perfect vendor, a coffee and food venue will be opening soon.

So if you’re looking for a fun outing with the family, Parabol Playground is a win-win – your kids get to burn off some energy on the cool climbing structures and slides, while you can share a bit of local history with them
