Reverse Advent Calendar is an initiative that empowers all members of the community to come together in collecting non-perishable food, toiletries and Christmas treats to be donated to people within our own community who are living with food insecurity.

A Reverse Advent Calendar flips the idea of a traditional Advent calendar. Instead of opening a window each day in the lead up to Christmas and getting a small chocolate, a Reverse Advent Calendar takes the focus off receiving and encourages participants to focus on giving instead.

For 12 days in December families, individuals, community groups, schools and businesses place one item of non-perishable food or toiletries into their box each day. When the box is full it is then donated to local food relief agencies to be distributed as they see fit to people struggling with food insecurity.

  • Collect an empty Reverse Advent Calendar box
  • Fill your box with food and toiletries – one item every day for 12 days
  • Return your filled box and it to be given to a food relief agency and distributed to people in need.

“I originally had a target of 500 boxes but we have already exceeded this from our Facebook posts (so thank you to the community),” says organiser Cindy Lambert. “A new target of 1,000 boxes has been set.”

The 2021 Foodbank Australia Hunger Report detailed that more than half of people impacted by severe food insecurity go a whole day without eating each week and two in five people seeking food relief do not get enough for their household’s needs.

Collect your Reverse Advent Calendar box from – Forestville or delivery will occur on 5 and 6 November 2022 to your nominated home address.

“I will be personally delivering boxes to people up until 8 November,” says Cindy. “If people are wanting to participate after I have completed the delivery of boxes, they can call me on 0417 279 294 and arrange to collect a box. Dr Sophie Scamps MP’s office at shop 1 and 2, 1238-1246 Pittwater Road, Narrabeen will also be a pick up and drop off location for boxes.”

Filled Reverse Advent Calendar boxes are to be returned by: Saturday 10 December to 27 Wellman Road, Forestville or Monday, 12 December to WorkInc, Bay 7, 6 Middlemiss Street, North Sydney or at anytime prior to 10 December to the office of Dr Sophie Scamps.

Reverse Advent Calendar boxes filled in the North Shore and Northern Beaches suburbs will be donated to – Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter, Mary’s House Crows Nest, Women’s & Children First Sydney, Phoenix House Crows Nest, Community Northern Beaches, Foodcare Dee Why, Gidget Foundation Australia and One Meal Northern Beaches.

Reverse Advent Calendar is an initiative that has three main intentions with the overarching goal of inspiring kindness and generosity.

  1. We encourage families, individuals, schools and workplaces to give generously to support people in their community who are experiencing food insecurity.
  2. We provide much needed resources to support the incredible work of food relief agencies in our community.
  3. We give boxes filled with non-perishable food, toiletries and Christmas treats to people in need at Christmas time.
