Bistro Mekong is a modern Asian diner in the centre of Castlecrag, serving up Thai and Southeast Asian inspired fare from the Indochine region, encompassing cuisines from Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos. This summer the popular lower North Shore restaurant has even more on offer…

Bistro Mekong at Castlecrag has become a local favourite in the few short years since it opened. With its beautiful alfresco setting, fabulous cocktail menu, family friendly dining options and mouth-watering Southeast Asian offerings, it’s little wonder. Not to mention it’s the brainchild of chef Tiw Rakarin, who’s had more than a little success beforehand…

In 2016, Thai chef Tiw realised a long-held vision. Inspired by the countries along the Mekong River – Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam – he created a unique Southeast Asian menu at Mekong restaurant in Chippendale. Within its first couple of years of trading, Mekong was awarded Best Asian in Sydney 2017, as well as Best Asian in NSW 2017, by the Restaurant and Catering Awards.

“Chef Tiw is always emphasising the importance of how we judge what we eat with our eyes before tasting.”

The awards weren’t surprising considering Tiw’s history – he’s worked in well-known kitchens in Boston, Paris, London, Norway, Los Angeles and more. When he moved to the lower North Shore a new dream was realised – the opening of Bistro Mekong Castlecrag.

“Castlecrag is a great community and neighbourhood, and there are some great dining options, but there’s nothing quite like Bistro Mekong,” he says. With a menu that offers options from land, sea, vegetarian, healthy and indulgent there really is something for everyone. Local favourites include the Slow Cooked Beef Curry with potato, chilli, roasted peanuts and roti, and Chef’s signature dish of Duck Red Curry with pineapple, smashed potato, tomato and basil oil. It’s considered “a duck lover’s nirvana”!

Seafood lovers often order the Burmese Prawns with caramelised onion, tamarind, balsamic and watercress salad or the Whole Steamed Barramundi with lemongrass, lime and green chilli sauce. Then of course there are the old favourites and the best takeout and home delivery options, like Pad Thai with prawn, Pad See Ew (Stir Fried Flat Noodle) or Pad Kee Mao (Spiced Flat Noodle and Tom Yum Fried Rice).

It’s hardly surprising Bistro Mekong has become so popular – it’s the perfect spot for a no-stress date night or a flavour-filled family dinner. It also offers great group dining and can now be booked for private events. The newly launched events offering can cater for 4 – 60 people for any type of event, whether it’s a business lunch, celebration, birthday party, end of year party, engagement or wedding; with set menus that start from just $59pp and free-flow or BYO beverage package options.

There are also has a lot of exciting promotions coming up for summer. “We have a daily Happy Hour, which offers $5 Beer and Wine from 5:30 – 6:30pm from Tuesday to Sunday. Tuesdays we also have our “Summer Specials’’ which is a selection of mains at dinner for $15 only!
