We’ve all witnessed the changes occurring at Northbridge Woolies, well here’s the official rundown on why, where everything is and what’s new…

It’s been a big year for our local Woolworths at Northbridge with a massive store upgrade happening before our eyes as we do the weekly grocery shop. Now that the store is complete, we spoke with Store Manager, Peter, to get the lowdown on the new areas and what you’ll find there. Our first question, of course, is what prompted the Woolies makeover?

“Our teams have spent a great deal of time understanding how our customers like to shop and looked across the globe for inspiration,”’ says Peter. “The new look store is designed with the local customer at the forefront and the enhancements were made to make the shopping experience for our customers more pleasant. We also wanted to offer a more personalised service so you can request for your bread to be sliced on the spot or deli meats sliced to your liking just by asking over the counter.”

The second question many a local is asking is what happened to the sushi bar? “Yes, the sushi bar was very popular,” says Peter. “This hasn’t gone. It’s just been moved to the deli section. It was relocated to make the shopping journey throughout the store more convenient. Even though the sushi bar has moved, our expert sushi chefs are still on hand making fresh sushi daily.”

Now that the sushi mystery has been solved, what else is new?…

Fresh Produce Section

How great is this area looking? It’s like an indoor farmer’s market, and the majority of the produce really does come straight from Aussie farmers. “We take great pride in partnering with Aussie farmers to bring you fruit and veg that’s fresh, crisp and full of flavour,” says Peter.

Look out for one of the sections here that’s called ‘The Odd Bunch’. It’s made up of fresh produce that may look a little different, and perhaps not perfect, but is just as beautiful on the inside, and just as healthy and nutritious. It also represents great value – not only does it save you money but it helps our farmers sell more of their produce too.

“Please also ask any of our friendly team what’s in season, or if you’d like your fruit or veg cut and wrapped to size, we’d be happy to help,” says Peter.

The Deli

It’s no secret that Willoughby City locals love a good deli, and you’ll be happy to see this area has been given a lot of attention in the makeover.

“It was inspired by a classic Italian delicatessen,” says Peter. “The glass cabinets are brimming with cured meats, salami, salads and antipasti from local and international producers. All are ready to serve, and the team can of course slice your meats just the way you like it – thick, thin or shaved. The olive section is worth exploring too, with plump Sicilians, rich Kalamatas and a wide variety of sliced, marinated and stuffed olives ready to enjoy.”

So what’s the most popular deli item in the area? Apparently it’s the D’Orsogna sliced honey leg ham served off the bone, and made from Australian Jarrah Honey and Australian Pork. Locals may love to know that the D’Orsogna family has been crafting authentic and flavoursome smallgoods here in Australia for more than 67 years. They began as a humble suburban butcher shop, then partnered with Woolworths just over 60 years ago and have now grown into a well-loved national brand.

The Butcher

This area has expanded to ensure everyone goes home with exactly what they were after. The butchers can slice your selection of fresh meat while you wait and are happy to offer cooking tips while you’re there. The weekly dilemma of coming up with something new and interesting for dinner each night has been well and truly solved. There’s an array of exciting choices in meats, cuts of meat, marinated meats and more.

“All the fresh meat you’ll find in store comes from right here in Australia,” says Peter. “That means with every bite, you’re supporting local Aussie farmers and their communities. And because it’s 100% Aussie, you’re also enjoying some of the finest quality in the world. Good farming practices are important to us, too, which is why all of our Woolworths branded fresh chicken is RSPCA approved, which means it’s ethically raised and delivered fresh to the store.”

The Cheese Section

A dedicated cheese section! Thank you to whoever voted this in. “Yes, if you’re a cheese lover, you’ll feel like a kid in a candy store here,” confirms Peter. “Hand-picked from around the globe, we’ve got a collection of different types to try. From local soft cheeses and infused French Brie to beautifully aged Italian Parmigiano-Reggiano.”

If you’re up for expanding your cheese horizons, there’s an array of new ones to try as well. “As with many good things in life, a sense of adventure is key,” says Peter. “You never know what new favourites you’ll discover. A good starting point is exploring cheese made from different types of milk. Cow’s milk tends to be the mildest in flavour – its creamy, sweet taste translates into a more subtle base flavour. Goat’s milk turns into a slightly more grassy, sweet and tangy cheese, whereas sheep’s milk has a milder grassy flavour with a tangier backbone and less buttery taste. And from there it’s time to start tasting from different regions around Australia, and then the world.”

The Bakery

Again, there’s more personal service on offer in this section. The team are not just baking the bread but offering to slice it too. “The bakery is your one-stop shop for gourmet loaves, pastries and party cakes,” says Peter. “We also have flatbread made fresh in-store, perfect for burritos, wraps or pizza bases, and we use only the finest ingredients in our in-store range with Aussie wheat flour.”

The bakery also has a selection of cakes and pastries. And if you have a celebration coming up (or perhaps just love cake!) you can order a custom-made cake over the counter. The bakers will be happy to chat about flavours, sizes, decorations and custom messages.

The Seafood Market

The seafood team are on hand here to chat about the catch of the day and what they’d recommend taking home for dinner. There’s also the free Bag & Bake option where you can choose your piece of fish, pick a seasoning or sauce (such as Lime & Chilli) and they’ll bag it for you ready to cook. Then you pop the bag in the oven when you get home.

“We have an exceptional array of seafood in our new fish market,” says Peter. “Our range covers everything from juicy prawns to the freshest fish fillets and 100% Tasmanian salmon.”

So make sure you take advantage of all the new features and personalised services on the next shopping trip, and don’t forget to say hi to Peter and his team who’ve been doing a fantastic job keeping the grocery run running smoothly for us all – particularly over the last few months.

“Woolworths Northbridge aims to provide a great shopping experience for our customers, good prices on products they want, a fantastic fresh offer and the convenience they are looking for,” says Peter. “We look forward to welcoming you and your families to our new look store and thank you for supporting us through this time. We hope you enjoy the store’s changes!”
