Pieces of Her

Have you caught the new thriller Pieces of Her? Keep an eye out for familiar spots, as some of the show was filmed right here in Willoughby!

A few years ago, two of our local venues saved the Aussie feature film, Malibu Crush, from the grips of the pandemic. Now more local venues are being used for filming – this time it’s the new and exciting Netflix series Pieces of Her. Turns out our area is becoming quite the Hollywood hub – so don’t be surprised if you spot some major stars at your local coffee shop!

Pieces of Her, an adaptation of New York Times bestselling thriller from author Karin Slaughter, stars Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress Toni Collette and acclaimed actor David Wenham. The NSW Government secured the Netflix project for Sydney through its Made In NSW fund. A move that would also see the new series deliver 400 local jobs and contribute an estimated $58 million dollars to the state’s economy.

Minister for the Arts, Don Harwin said in late 2020 that securing the eight-episode Netflix series was a massive win for the NSW screen industry.

“Through the NSW Government’s Made in NSW fund, and with our successful management of the COVID-19 pandemic, NSW is a highly attractive place to film,” he said in a media release. “We are sending a clear message that we are open for business, a safe location to film, and keen to welcome great opportunities to the state.

Netflix’s Pieces of Her will deliver a substantial investment to the state’s economy and provide a significant amount of work for local cast and crew along with catering, security and other on-set operations.”

It’s great to see big titles coming to Australia and it doesn’t end with Pieces of Her. Another Netflix production, Escape From Spiderhead, starring Aussie superstar Chris Hemsworth, began shooting in the Gold Coast last year.

How Does Willoughby Feature in Pieces of Her?

The Netflix drama thriller, which was developed by Homeland‘s Charlotte Stoudt and Lesli Linka Glatter and directed by Minkie Spiro (Downton Abbey, Better Call Saul), is set in a sleepy Georgia town. However, as mentioned above, it was filmed in NSW – including right here in Willoughby.

According to Willoughby Living Facebook Group members, Australian Piano Warehouse on Penshurst St. was used as one of the sets. However, the owners of the business were sworn to secrecy on the scenes being filmed there – so see if you can spot them in the show now. It was also hard to miss that Crabbes Avenue and Club Willoughby were full of trucks for all the crew and filming equipment. WL members also spotted Toni Collete in the area as they were passing by.

More on the Storyline of Pieces of Her

If you haven’t read the book, here’s the synopsis:

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all? Andrea knows everything about her mother, Laura. She knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we? But all that changes when a trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura, she was someone completely different.

For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one would ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again. The police want answers and Laura’s innocence is on the line, but she won’t speak to anyone, including her own daughter. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumb trail of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either one of them.”

It certainly sounds like an intriguing premise! And now we can all watch it and spot our local venues!!
