Looking for a coffee shop open past 1pm? Love proper Italian gelato? Need a stunning cake for your next event? A new spot that ticks all the boxes has just opened in Neutral Bay, offering both specialty coffee and delicious gelato and pastries.

Having already established a successful location for Gelateria Zini in Circular Quay, owner Matteo Zini was looking for his second gelato venture to have more of a community feel.

“Circular Quay is a great location, but we were missing that sense of local suburban community. There’s a lot on offer for every kind of food in the Eastern suburbs, and on that side of the bridge, but not much North of the city,” says Matteo.

Zini’s drool worthy Affogato

“I spoke to few friends of mine that live in the area about the possibility of exploring suburbs such as Mosman, Cremorne and Neutral Bay and they all agreed that there was nothing like our gelateria or the pastries from the guys at Cornetti & Co – and people are craving it.”

Sharing a space on Military Road (near The Pickled Possum) with Cornetti & Co, a longtime supplier of Matteo’s pastries, Zini Contemporary Gelateria feels like a natural fit. Cornetti & Co has provided Matteo with delicious brioche for his gelato creations, cookies, and semifreddo cakes for years. When Matteo began searching for a new location, he proposed the shared space concept, and Cornetti & Co jumped at the chance to join forces.

“Nowadays the hospitality industry is struggling a lot and opening new stores is becoming more and more risky and more and more expensive. I think this is a great concept to share costs, divide the risk and also offer people complimentary products,” says Matteo.

“I think coffee and pastries goes really well with Gelato and they can be enjoyed at different times of the day. Customers can come enjoy Cornetto and coffee in the morning and come back in the afternoon or after dinner for gelato.

Zini’s special creation for Vivid

“Customers can come in to pick up a cake to take away or a box of pastries along with a take home pack of gelato. It’s a pretty common concept in Italy, especially in the South, and people are really enjoying it so far.”

When it comes to flavours, Matteo reveals some of the crowd-pleasers: the rich and nutty Pistachio made from their own 100% pure paste, the decadent Rocher (a chocolate and hazelnut dream), and the ever-popular Salted Caramel.

But don’t miss their signature White Coffee gelato, where Matteo’s specialty coffee beans are infused for a full 24 hours, creating a unique and irresistible flavour experience.

Cornetti & Co.’s delicious pastries

Don’t miss out on their ever-evolving selection of monthly specials, like the current special, Genmaicha, made from a blend of matcha green tea and roasted rice.

Worried about a sugar overload? Don’t be! Zini’s gelato boasts a lighter profile compared to traditional options. Matteo, a gelato maestro who consults for businesses worldwide, crafts his creations with lower sugar content, resulting in a delightful balance of sweetness and a focus on “aromatic note and mouthfeel.”

“Both myself and my staff are trained gelato chefs that take the quality of the ingredients and freshness of the product very seriously. We don’t take shortcuts. Same for Roberto, the owner (with his wonderful partner Maria) and pastry chef at Cornetti and Co, and that is why it really works between us. There is a mutual respect for each other work and each other’s product.”

So the next time you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, support this new local business! Head down, say hi to the friendly staff, and pick up some delicious gelato and pastries.
