Ride Your Heart Out This Summer With Family-Owned Scooter Brand, Atlasco

13-year-old Willoughby local, Lukan Gillard, has been scootering since he could walk. Now he has turned his passion into Australia’s leading ‘rider owned’ online Scooter retailer AtlasCo, and his family have jumped on board for the ride.

Like a duck to water, Lukan Gillard has always been drawn to anything with wheels. This kid-preneur grew up in Willoughby and would spend afternoons and weekends scootering with kids in the local neighbourhood.

“He loved the feeling of adventure and freedom, the never-ending tricks he could practice and learn, and the social aspect of doing something fun with his friends,” Lukan’s mother, Kath Edgar says. “He also loved the technical aspect of scootering… He learnt everything there is to know about the different parts, the styles of scootering, the brands and the modifications he could make to design his dream scooter set up.”

Lukan became obsessed with building custom scooters and, when he turned eight, started actively buying, selling, and trading scooter parts with his local riding community.

“The ‘meet ups’ at Sydney skateparks to trade parts and drop offs or collections at our family home were becoming an almost daily occurrence. So Lukan decided he wanted to build his own online retail scooter brand and offer the scootering community convenient access to the parts and accessories that he and his crew most love to ride,” Kath explains.

It took a bold vision, help from the whole family and lots of pestering of his parents to make Lukan’s dream a reality. Four years later and amid the first Australian COVID-19 lockdown, AtlasCo.online was born.

As a locally owned and family-run scooter brand, AtlasCo are all about fostering, supporting, and promoting the joy, connection, and freedom of riding. According to Lukan, the most rewarding parts of starting his own business include “selling and promoting the best scooter brands, creating a community of amazing riders, competing in the National Competitions, and doing what I love most, which is riding!”

“My biggest challenge is keeping up with him and his never-ending ideas,” says Kath. “However, this is a challenge and great reward, as I love being able to then help him enable and execute on his dreams and goals whilst he learns invaluable skills running a business.”

One of the things that the AtlasCo Team enjoys is giving back and helping those in need of support. This is what inspired the AtlasCo Gives Initiative. In 2020/21, AtlasCo donated 5% of all profit to The Red Shield Appeal, participated in the Vinnies Sleepout and once COVID-19 restrictions are fully lifted, they plan to run a series of AtlasCo Ride days in association with Oasis Youth Support Network, providing kids that don’t necessarily have the chance to ’get out and ride’ that opportunity.

“We want to roll up our sleeves and actively connect with young Australians who need help the most,” Kath explains. “We will run community outreach days where we give young people who don’t have the opportunity to scooter ride and experience the freedom, joy, and mateship that it brings.”

In the future, Lukan hopes to open a retail outlet and is about to launch his own scootering inspired urban jewellery and streetwear range. Customers can also look forward to Scooter Coaching which AtlasCo will be launching this school holidays.
