Watch Shakespeare outdoors at the magical Haven Amphitheatre this June, when Come You Spirits brings the bard to life with a feast for the senses. There’ll be moonlight and sunrise performances!
Written by Jo Bloom & Charles Mayer, Come you Spirits Theatre Company are delighted to be the first professional theatre company in years to re-ignite The Haven Amphitheatre in Castlecrag with Romeo & Juliet and Macbeth playing Tuesday 21st to Sunday 26th June 2022.
Come You Spirits is a collective of actors based in Sydney’s Lower North Shore and currently touring NSW giving a fresh voice to the greatest stories of our time.
“Full of dynamic pace, movement and complex characters, the performances of Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet are opposites in narrative, but equals in life-affirming declaration,” says writer and actor, Jo Bloom. “We’ve taken a unique approach to performance – uniting ancient tradition and the basic human energies of the heart, the masculine and feminine, our connection to the land and the pursuit of something greater.”
The recently revitalised Haven at Castlecrag is “magical and enchanting” according to Jo, and it certainly makes for the perfect outdoor performance space. Particularly for Come You Spirits who will utilise the natural elements to make the show something really special.
The first performance of Romeo and Juliet will be held at sunrise on June 21st which marks the winter solstice. “The intense burst of dawn sunlight activates the space, and releases serotonin – your joy hormone – in everyone’s brain, kicking out the sleep hormone melatonin,” says Jo. “When this happens during a show like Romeo & Juliet being performed for you in nature, you buzz with vitality.”
Macbeth will be performed in the evening. “For the evening shows, we have our own lighting, candlelight, flambeaux and a fire pit as well,” says Jo. “Celebrating the natural landscape, most of the acting takes place across the space, the actors being on various levels moving amongst the audience, including the accessibility area on the road, which is actually part of the designated performance space.”
Come You Spirits will also be using the soundscape to take the audience on a journey. “The actors are amplified to allow for full vocal range in the performance and the speakers in the space are supported by large, wooden, constructed flat reflector sheets that look like monoliths from Stonehenge,” says Jo. “These are positioned at specific points that hold the principles of sacred geometry and temple building.”
The cast are four experienced professional actors who have worked internationally and across Australia, seasoned in Shakespeare and classical theatre, film and TV.
