The Sydney Skinny happens at beautiful Cobblers Beach every year, encouraging participants to love the skin they’re in and raise money for a worthy cause.

If you’ve made a New Year’s resolution to get out of your comfort zone, you’re in luck. The world’s biggest open-water skinny dip is on in Mosman. Join thousands of people baring it all for a good cause at the Sydney Skinny.

Established in 2013, this year’s event will take place on Sunday, March 17, 2024. While stripping for a dip sounds cheeky (pun intended), the event began as a way to unite the community and raise money for brain cancer research. This year, 100 percent of funds raised will go to the Charlie Teo Foundation. The Sydney-based charity has donated over $10-million to brain cancer projects and research.

The swim starts at Cobblers Beach (a nudist beach) in Middle Head in Sydney Harbour. There are two courses to choose from, 300-metres for those wanting to make a splash. Or, 900m for the more water confident. The Maroubra Life Saving Team will also be dotted along the course to provide water safety. Drones will also monitor the water for any potential dangers. Read: no-one wants a bluebottle sting well, anywhere.

The ocean swim is untimed, meaning the focus isn’t on winning the race, but celebrating life, courage, and acceptance. Many participants are cancer survivors and their friends and family.

If you’re keen on taking the plunge, rest assured there are strict rules to protect your privacy. No boats or spectators will be able to access the course. This exclusive event only allows ticket holders on the secluded beach.

The festivities will run from 7am-2pm and no, you do not have to be in your birthday suit the entire time. You stay clothed until your wave is called. On exit from the water, event staff will hand you one of their iconic Sydney Skinny sarongs to cover up.

Ocean swimmers often say you never regret a swim. And the organisers of the Sydney Skinny certainly agree. With the organisers stating, “One thing we are sure about is that nobody [has] ever regretted it!”

Bottoms up!
