The popular beachside scavenger hunt at beautiful Balmoral Beach is back and better than ever in 2022.
If a Clean Up Australia Day event and your local swap meet markets got together, their brainchild would likely be the Seaside Scavenge. The product of a collaboration between Take 3 for the Sea, Mosman Council and a number of local community groups, this year’s Seaside Scavenge returns to Balmoral Beach. The 2022 event will be held on Sunday the 18th of September from 10am to 2pm. Add it to the calendar because, trust us, picking up rubbish has never been so fun!
Take 3 for the Sea has been running clean ups across the country since 2015 but this is their first year operating the Balmoral scavenge. This unique concept is described best by Take 3 as turning trash into “cash”. For every 10 pieces of litter collected and catalogued each participant will receive a trash token. These tokens can then be used to purchase items at the adjacent pop-up market. This year’s market will include quality pre-loved books, clothes and toys.
Not only is it a lot of fun for participants, but Take 3 also reports that, over the 90 events held across Australia so far approximately 15,000kg of litter has been removed from the environment. On top of that, nearly 12,000kg of pre-loved goods have now found new homes. Furthermore, the data collected helps the Australian Marine Debris Database better inform local governments on ways to reduce waste. Sounds like a win-win situation to us!
Alongside the main scavenger event will be a range of family-friendly stalls, live music performances and presentations from local ‘waste warriors’. This presents a great opportunity for all attendees to learn more about their local environment and how they can help to preserve it. There will even be face painting and art and craft activities for the kids.
One stall to look out for will be the Zero Emissions Sydney North Group. If you haven’t heard of them, we highly recommend checking out their Facebook group or website. They’re a volunteer community group dedicated to assisting the local community in reducing their emissions. Not only do they have some great advice on how to reduce your environmental footprint, but they also have some great money-saving tips too.
If the concept of engaging with your local community AND helping the environment wasn’t enough – did we also mention there’s going to be a bike-powered smoothie stall? Make the most of the Spring weather that’s just around the corner and enjoy a fun family day both enjoying and appreciating our beautiful Balmoral Beach.
