It’s the most fun you can have saving the planet, and now Seaside Scavenge is arriving in our local area. The whole community is invited to attend!

Whoever said cleaning up rubbish was a chore? Certainly not the fun-loving team from Seaside Scavenge, who have made it their business to make clean-ups more upbeat. “Seaside Scavenge represents a passionate group of individuals who love more than anything to see our waterways clean, our pre-loved stuff shared and to groove along to toe-tapping beats whilst we do it. The initiative was born from a mix of simple ideas, nursed by brilliant minds and raised by a whole lot of hard yakka. What was once a small clothes swap and beach clean is now a project that has grown and inspired communities to take a step towards cleaner coastlines and conscious consumerism across the globe.”

We’re well aware in our local area that our world is drowning in a sea of plastic. Seaside Scavenge breaks that down on their website to give us a stark picture. “Every water bottle, piece of packaging, chip packet, plastic bag, you have ever used is still here and will be here for hundreds if not thousands of years to come. Australians also send six tonnes of textiles (mostly clothes) to landfill every 10 minutes. ” And that’s where the not-for-profit organisation comes in. They want to encourage everyday people to clean-up, purchase less and stop pre-loved items before they end up in a hole in the ground. So they decided to throw quite the clean-up party!

When you come to a Scavenge you can expect to:

  • Clean up your local waterway – upon registration you will be provided with a bag and gloves to clean-up. Once you’ve done your clean-up of the local area, return to sort your litter into recyclables and non-recyclables and record the data for an Australia wide Marine Debris Database with the smiley crew of Scavengers.
  • Pick up some fresh & funky second-hand goods – every 10 pieces of litter earns you a Trash Token which is the currency in our pop-up market filled with the funkiest and most practical of pre-loved goods donated by the local community.
  • Connect with a community of thinkers – established local clean-up, waste-wise and green groups will be out and about and ready for a chat. They’ll be able to help you get your hands and mind into some on-going community action.
  • Be inspired by the good vibes – there’s enough doom and gloom in the world, so the Scavenge is about putting a positive twist on things…. With a splash of live music, a dabble of wild craft/upcycling workshops and a taste of original thinking we can spearhead these environmental and social issues together.

Amazingly, Seaside Scavenge is celebrating their 50th Scavenge next weekend on Saturday May 4th from 9am – and they’re doing it locally. The whole community is invited to join the fun and help to clean up our Lane Cove River at the Lane Cove Rotary Athletics Field Oval. Much-loved locals Tonic Lane will be offering $3 coffees and $3 ice cream cones (both zero waste – bring your KeepCup or take a mug from the mug library). There will also be prizes from 4 Pines Brewing CompanyComplete Health Chiropractic and Lane Cove Aquatic Leisure Centre up for grabs, and myTOMRA AustraliaBye-Bye PlasticPureFree and the Repair Cafe Sydney North will be supporting the event. Talented local musicians such as McKinley Payne MusicNoon Shift band and Miška will be performing on the day. There are also two alternate local sites if you prefer – Clive Park Northbridge and Tunks Park Cammeray.
