Local senior citizens who love music, dance and making new friends – this one’s for you! The Dance Health Alliance has brought their subsidised dance and movement program to Chatswood and it’s called DanceMoves.
DanceMoves has arrived in Chatswood, and provides gentle exercise through face-to-face activities for seniors. With no dance experience necessary, the classes are fun for anyone who loves music, movement and friendship.
Movement through dance has many physical benefits for seniors, such as enhancing memory and promoting muscle and bone strength to improve balance to avoid falls. Good mental health is supported by the release of endorphins from physical activity and the connection provided through social inclusion. Classes are incredibly beneficial for seniors with Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia and Arthritis.
Gwen Korebrits, the Dance Health Alliance CEO, says “Bringing people together in small groups in the area that people live in is proven to be most effective for fostering social inclusion. We have a proven track record of running programs with consistently high attendance and steady growth of participants. Even during the peak of COVID-19, when classes had to convert to online Zoom classes, our attendance was higher than ever. This positively impacts older people as it fosters connection and friendship. Participants will also experience improved physical and psychological health, including; improved aerobic fitness, balance, coordination, reduced anxiety and depression, elevated mood, and optimism. It’s a win-win! And the smiling faces of our participants speak louder than words!’
Di is a regular participant of the DanceMoves programme with the Dance Health Alliance. She used to love Ballroom/Latin dancing. However, due to an injury, she has not been able to dance for two years, until she saw these classes advertised!! She says: ‘It has been great to participate in the program, and the teachers engage you with ease; the whole experience is inclusive and fun and makes me feel like I’m dancing again. I would not hesitate to encourage others to join; the more, the merrier!
The Dance Health Alliance already has its programs running over the Northern Beaches and North Shore for five years. It facilitates its dementia-specific programmes in Aged Care facilities all over Australia. The Chatswood chapter will get up and running as soon as there’s enough interest – so register your interest now!
The DanceMoves program will be held at Leap Health and Wellbeing Studio, Ground Floor, Tower A, 799 Pacific Highway (corner, Thomas St,) Chatswood. The cost will be $10 a class (subsidised by the NSW Govt), and the classes run for an hour.
The Dance Health Alliance is proudly a COVID safe organisation
